The Atlanta Christmas Light Show We Can't Wait For
Last December, my family stumbled into a holiday tradition that I have a feeling we'll be doing for a very long time. We visited an Atlanta Christmas Light show at World of Illumination in Marietta, and even months later, we're still talking about it. There are plenty of Christmas activities around Atlanta during the holidays, but this one managed to feel both exciting and strangely relaxing at the same time. It wasn't rushed, it wasn't stressful, and nobody was checking their phone every five minutes. We simply piled into the car, turned up the Christmas music, and enjoyed a night that ended up becoming one of our favorite memories of the season.
Our evening actually started with a date night twist. My husband and I decided to spend a little time walking around Marietta Square before heading toward the show. The whole area already had that cozy holiday energy that Atlanta does so well. Families were out shopping, people were carrying bags from local stores, and the weather was cold enough for sweaters without being the kind of cold that makes you miserable.
By the time we drove toward the Six Flags White Water area, the excitement was already building.
I think that's part of why this experience worked so well for us. It wasn't just one activity. It felt like an entire holiday evening.
We Were Looking for Something Different
Every December, our family starts searching for things to do that aren't the same old routine. We love decorating the house, but we also want at least one outing that feels special.
If you live around Atlanta, you know how quickly holiday schedules fill up. There are school events, office parties, family gatherings, and suddenly December is over before you know it.
We wanted something that everybody would enjoy without requiring a ton of planning. That's how we landed on World of Illumination.
Buying tickets online was easy, which I highly recommend doing early when next season becomes available. Then all we had to do was show up and enjoy ourselves.
The location in Marietta was also incredibly convenient. Families were arriving from all over the Atlanta suburbs, and it felt like the entire community had decided to make a night of it.
Driving Through the Lights Was Better Than I Expected
Last season's Candy Rush theme was playful and colorful in a way that instantly put everyone in a good mood. Every corner revealed something new, and the lights seemed endless. Bright candy displays, giant illuminated scenes, and synchronized music turned an ordinary drive into something much more memorable.
One of my favorite moments was watching the lights reflect across the windshield while holiday music played through the radio. It created this cozy atmosphere inside the car where everyone was talking, laughing, and pointing at different displays.
That's something I appreciate more as I've gotten older. It can be difficult to find activities that genuinely work for every age group. Usually someone ends up bored, but this wasn't one of those experiences.
Everyone had a favorite part.
Some people loved the tunnels of lights. Others loved the giant candy scenes. My family couldn't stop talking about how creative everything was.
The entire drive felt thoughtfully designed without ever becoming overwhelming.
It Became Part of Our Holiday Tradition
One thing I've noticed about Atlanta families is that traditions matter here.
People have favorite restaurants they visit every year, favorite neighborhoods to see decorations, and favorite holiday recipes they make every December.
Now, World of Illumination has joined that list for us.
We've already started saying things like, "We'll do that again next year."
I think that's always the sign of a great experience. You don't have to convince yourself to go back because you're already picturing it happening again.
Our extended family is even talking about coming next time. I can easily imagine this becoming one of those outings where grandparents, cousins, and friends all end up joining us.
That's why I'm already watching for next season's announcements. The themes change every year, which makes it exciting because you know you'll experience something completely new.
The Atlanta Christmas Light show itself may change, but that sense of anticipation probably won't.
It's Worth the Drive From Anywhere Around Atlanta
One thing I noticed while we were there was how many people were making the trip from surrounding communities.
You'll see families coming from Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, Roswell, Alpharetta, Sandy Springs, Woodstock, and even Downtown Atlanta. It makes perfect sense.
Atlanta is huge, but this feels like one of those activities that brings everyone together during the holiday season. No matter where you live, it's easy to turn it into a full evening.
You could grab dinner beforehand, explore a little around Marietta, and then head to the lights afterward.
Some families probably make it an annual outing with relatives visiting from out of town. Others might turn it into a date night tradition every December.
The beauty of it is that there's no wrong way to do it.
You simply show up and enjoy being surrounded by holiday energy for a while.
We're Already Looking Forward to Next Season
I know it's only spring and we're nowhere near Christmas right now, but that hasn't stopped us from talking about going back.
There's something fun about having holiday traditions to look forward to. It gives you these little markers throughout the year that remind you good things are coming.
We don't know what next season's theme will be yet, and that's part of the excitement. World of Illumination is always creating something new, which means every visit feels fresh.
We've already decided that once tickets become available, we'll be buying ours early.
If you've never been before, I definitely recommend keeping an eye out for announcements because dates fill up quickly once the holiday season arrives.
I have a feeling this year's Atlanta Christmas Light show will become another one of those nights our family talks about for months afterward.
A Holiday Memory That Sticks With You
One of my favorite memories from that evening actually happened on the drive home.
Nobody was in a hurry to get anywhere. Christmas music was still playing softly through the speakers, and we were all talking about our favorite displays while driving back through the Atlanta suburbs.
It wasn't some giant life changing moment. It was simply one of those evenings where everybody was happy, relaxed, and enjoying being together.
Sometimes that's exactly what the holidays are supposed to be.
As another season gets closer, we're already making plans. We'll probably grab dinner beforehand, bundle up in our favorite sweaters, and head back to Marietta once again.
The Atlanta Christmas Light show has officially become part of our holiday tradition, and I have a feeling we're only at the beginning of many years of making memories there.
